Compass, the startup data benchmarking company, has just released their second “Startup Ecosystem Report”. It has been three years since their prior report. In their new findings, New York City has risen to second place, leaving Tel Aviv (the previous second place holder) at fifth. At number one is Silicon Valley, which comes at no surprise.
Tel Aviv was not the only location to fall, Vancouver, Toronto and Sydney also fell, while Santiago, Melbourne and Waterloo dropped out of the top 20 entirely. Austin, Bangalore, Singapore and Chicago all rose in the latest rankings.
Compass collaborated with Deloitte, Crunchbase, Orb Intelligence, Global Entrepreneurship Week, Dealroom, as well as 60 local partners to performtheir research. There were 200 interviews conducted with entrepreneurs and local experts from 25 countries. Data was collected from 11,000 surveys completed by startups, investors and other stakeholders in the last five months. There was support from Ron Berman at Wharton Business School, Dr. Thomas Funke from the German Federal Ministry for Economics and startup theorist Steve Blank.
